How to read the parallel ladder before you buy

  • Base vs. refractor vs. parallel: "base" chrome carries no refractive coating. A refractor is the chromium card with Topps' light-splitting coating over it. "Parallel" is the umbrella term for any alternate version of a card — every refractor is a parallel, but not every parallel is a refractor.
  • Scarcity reads off the serial stamp, not the color name. No stamp = unnumbered and common. /99 = genuinely scarce. /25 = serious-money territory. /5 = trophy card. 1/1 = the SuperFractor, the top of the ladder.
  • The unnumbered-parallel trap: plenty of colored parallels carry no serial at all. If a listing won't show a clear photo of the serial area, don't assume scarcity from the color alone.
  • Chromium grades harder than paper. Edge chipping/silvering, surface scratches, and print lines show up far more visibly on chrome stock than on paper card stock — run the numbers with the grading ROI calculator before you submit.
